Book launch: CHRIS MARKER IN LATIN AMERICA

Publication by academic Carolina Amaral de Aguiar, part of the book collection laFuga – Heavy Metals.

Presented by Argentine academic and film critic Eduardo Russo and by Chilean video artist, researcher and academic Claudia Aravena.

About Carolina Amaral de Aguiar: She is a professor at the Institute of International Relations of the University of São Paulo (IRI-USP) and holds a doctorate in History from the same university. She currently directs the research laboratory Worlds in Transition (IRL 2034), a partnership between the University of São Paulo and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Her academic work focuses primarily on the relationship between Latin American and European cinema during the 1960s and 1970s.

Synopsis: Chris Marker is a key figure for understanding the relationship between cinema, politics, and memory in the second half of the 20th century. This book maps the French filmmaker's connections to Latin America and analyzes his films about the continent, made during the 1960s and 70s, a period marked by the Cuban Revolution, the rise to power of the Popular Unity government, dictatorships, and the emergence of a new left.

This study reveals the complexity of a body of work that combined political commitment, formal experimentation, and constant critical reflection on the paths of the left. Through the analysis of films such as Yes to Cuba!, The Battle of the Ten Million, The spiral, The embassy y The background of the air is red., his links with Latin American filmmakers, institutions and revolutionary processes are reconstructed.

Chris Marker's cinema is characteristic of an intense period of aesthetic and political exchange in which the so-called Third World played a leading role in the European revolutionary landscape. Within this context, Latin America appears not only as an object of representation, but also as a crucial space for rethinking the hopes, defeats, and dilemmas of the left.

This activity is free to access, no prior registration required.

It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes early.
